Journal Thursday

What a day!

For today's (this week's) journal...

  1. Close your eyes and take a deep breath...in through the nose and then out through the mouth....then repeat the deep breathing exercise once more.
  2. Now, open your eyes and write the first 3 words that come to your mind in a vertical (up-and-down) row.
  3. For each word, write about what each of them means to you at this moment.
  4. Review what you wrote...if anything seems negative or out of sorts with you, give yourself a few moments to reflect on how you may improve from the thoughts and feelings that flowed out in your words.
If things seem overwhelming, then find a trusted friend to talk to or consider setting up a counseling session or 2 with a counselor to sort things out in a private, confidential setting. Go to our pathways website for more information.

Feelings...nothing more than feelings

Feelings, feelings, we all have them. Some of us express them more than others but we all have 'em. Are feelings right or wrong? Good or bad? No. It's about what inside of us that triggered the feelings. It's what we do with our feelings. They are invaluable to us and act as an internal barometer telling us what's going on inside us.

What do your feelings tell you about yourself? Do you tend to avoid or ignore them? Tell everyone around you about how you feel?

If there's times you can't seem to make sense of them or them keep coming up with internal turmoil or distress, then it may be time to seek some help with a counselor to sort them out and get some peace of mind back in your life.

Getting Help Myself So I Can Help Others

It doesn't take long to look around and see the need for help...the economy, loss of jobs, bankruptcies, tornadoes, results of wars, foreclosures, and recently the devastation in Haiti. We also see how resourceful people become during these times and many lend a helping hand to others. The need for reciprocal relationships is huge especially now and especially in a local face-to-face community. But what if I can't trust others? If I am surrounded by takers and few givers? How much should I give? Do I give my last dollar or the shirt off my back in order to help others? When do I ask for help? Who can I trust? Many questions come to mind as we face uncertainty.

When it comes to counseling, many times we use the analogy of the flight attendant giving instructions just before take off. The attendant explains the exits, seat belts, laboratories, and then about the oxygen masks in case of low cabin pressure. They show us how to put them on and if we have small children to put our mask on first, then the child's mask. Why? I want my child to breathe and survive, right? A natural parental instinct. But in times of crisis I need to be stable and breathing well so I can in turn help my scared, frantic child. As I am calm, gain a sense of direction, am assured, the more I can be of help for others. When you feel and are more confident, you will be more ready and able to see clearly enough to assist and bless others.

Journal Thursday

On this Journal Thursday, consider just one goal you would like to reach. Dream about it for a bit. What would it be like to achieve this goal? See yourself working toward it. Visualize it being completed.

Now, write out your one goal and include the value and importance of this goal for you.

What Drives Motivation?

A question of the centuries. Many factors come to mind...
  • Self satisfaction, gratification, pleasure, fulfillment, greed, and for some self-deprecation
  • Kindness, peace toward others or environment
  • Guilt, shame, fear, anger, bitterness, rage, hate
  • Restoration, health, healing
  • Urgency
  • Love
What motivates you? Perhaps a mix of each of these at different times in your day, week, year, or life. Consider carefully what motivates you, the actions you take out of your motivation and the outcome/s that may follow. What, when, where, how, and who will be affected by your decision/s?

Journal Thursday

Along the line of motivation...Identify 3 things that motivate (or unmotivate) you to set goals.

Write these 3 things down and journal a bit about each one.

Now read over what you just wrote. What out of this can you learn about yourself? Jot these observations down as well.

New Year...New Goals?

Well, here we are.. the 2010 year is in full swing...but have you set a goal for yourself? It sure is easy to say and dream of having a goal to meet but what keeps us from believing in goals, setting goals, creating a step by step plan to achieving them?

M-O-T-I-V-A-T-I-O-N.

Take a moment and weigh/consider your motivation for goal setting.
Hope, value, passion, love, peace, joy and other reasons may be motivators for pursuing goals. What will yours be?
